I've been picking up a fair bit of local electrician type work around Chatswood recently, and I've got to say, it really nourishes the soul.
That seems like an odd thing to say now that I type it out loud, but I do really like it. It makes me feel like I'm contributing to society, like I'm make a difference to my local community. I'm getting to meet people and feel like I'm making a tangible impact on their lives.
After years of being burrowed down in carparks and fire-stairs fixing emergency lighting, or working on big strata jobs where I'm doing lighting upgrades in hallways, or sweating it out in an MDF room rebuilding switchboards, I think I've finally found something that feels rewarding.
It's easy to get caught up in the grind and just think you're doing the same job day in, day out... but there's more to it than that when you're a local electrician.
I like working with my neighbours to install more energy efficient lighting to help save them money and light up their life. I like helping to increase power supplies for new ovens that will feed families. I like making sure safety switches are installed to keep little ones safe.
The people aspect of my job is definitely what gets me out of bed in the morning.
I find it really rewarding to see families in action while I'm a guest in their home. I'm still smiling about Aaron, aged 5, who was fascinated by my tester and wanted to try it. I'm proud that Rob is growing his family and wants to renovate his kitchen to be prepared for their feeding demands. I feel melancholic about Margaret's cat that hasn't been well and requires expensive vet treatments. I like that I'm helping real everyday people and not just corporates.
Being your local tradesman makes me feel like I belong. It makes me feel like I have a purpose in this giant city we call Sydney. I do my bit by charging a reasonable price for a necessary service. Being the best electrician I can be for you and your family gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling inside.
I appreciate that you bring me into your homes and trust me with your safety. It's a great responsibility to have. Thank you for your confidence in me.
